Pioneer Coaches

 

 

 

 

 

Dave Schmidt, Sr.

 

Dave is presently into his 23rd season as head wrestling coach of the Pioneers. He has been at Leavenworth High School since 1984 when he was assistant coach under Hank Keller. He teaches world history, strength and conditioning class, and is the defensive coordinator for Football. He also helps with off-season strength and conditioning.

Dave started teaching at Richmond High School in Missouri (1975- 1978), where he was an assistant coach for the football team, and head coach for the wrestling team. From 1978-1984, Coach Schmidt was at Excelsior Springs High School in Missouri, as an assistant coach in both football and wrestling. While at Excelsior Springs High School Dave taught world history, coordinated the off-season strength and conditioning program, and helped with girls track. While still at Excelsior, Coach Schmidt helped with the boys track team here at Leavenworth High School. He has also been an assistant coach for William Jewell and Northern Colorado University in the areas of football, wrestling, and track.

Dave Schmidt is a 1968 graduate of North Kansas City High School. He earned his undergraduate degree in history and physical education from William Jewell College in 1973. While at William Jewell, he earned All-American Honorable Mentions in football, All-District in track and football, and was voted Outstanding Athlete in 1972. In 2001 Dave earned his masters degree from Baker University.

Dave and his wife Jennifer have five children: Jeremiah, Amber, Jessica Carr, Dave, Jr., and Dakota. Dakota, seven, competes in football, wrestling, soccer, and baseball. Dave and Jennifer have three grandchildren: Blake (10), Kyan (4), and Madisyn (10 months). Coach Schmidt was voted Kansas 6A Coach of the Year in 1999.  Dave was inducted into the William Jewell College Athletic Hall of Fame in the fall of 2007.

 

Jay Johnston

 

Jay is presently in his second year at Leavenworth (his alma mater) and teaches United States History and World Geography. He is an assistant coach in football for West Middle School. Jay was a three time state qualifier and a two time state finalist (1998 and 1999) at 140 lbs. His best buddy is a yellow lab named Daisy.

Jay Johnston graduated from Missouri Valley College in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree in social studies education. While in college Jay made the dean’s list and was a two time NAIA national qualifier in wrestling.

From 2005-2006 Jay taught geography and government at Warsaw High School in Missouri. During his time at Warsaw Jay was an assistant wrestling and football coach.

Matt Long

 

Matt is in his 7th year with the Pioneer Wrestling team, after helping with the Fort Leavenworth Wrestling Club for four years. He was honored as the KWCA 6A Assistant Coach of the Year in 2004.

Matt is a 1996 graduate of Leavenworth High School. During high school Matt Long was a starter for the football team and a three time state qualifier in wrestling. He earned KWCA All-American honors as a senior. Coach Matt Long works with the middle weight classes of the Leavenworth High School’s wrestling team.

Matt has been in construction since 1996 and is currently working for K.A. Wendt Construction.  Matt and his wife Sanna have a son Julian Richard who is three.

Joe Allison

 

This is Joe’s 3rd year being an assistant coach for high school wrestling. He has been on the Pioneer Football coaching staff for the last four seasons; he helps with the running backs. Joe is the new head coach for softball and also helps with the West Middle School wrestling program.

 Joe is a former graduate of Leavenworth High School where he competed in football, wrestling, and baseball. He started as a fullback and a mainstay at middle linebacker for the Pioneers. During high school Joe wrestled in the 171 weight class. He also played the position of catcher for three seasons on the varsity baseball team. Coach Joe Allison works with the upper weight classes of the Pioneer wrestling team.

From 1999-2000 Joe was a linebacker on the Benedictine University football team, as well as a catcher on their baseball team. He then transferred to Washburn University where he finished his college football career as a fullback for the Icabods. Joe earned his B.E.D. degree in physical education from Washburn University.

   

 

Jimmy Thompson

 

This will be Jimmy’s 4th year on the Pioneer wrestling staff. Jimmy works a lot with the lighter weight classes.

Jimmy is a 1999 graduate of Leavenworth High School. During high school Jimmy participated in football and wrestling. He earned All-Area Honorable Mention honors in wrestling and was a state qualifier in 1997.

Jimmy earned his degree in elementary education from Sterling College in 2004.While at Sterling Jimmy made the dean’s list. He was a member of the Student Activities Board. He was also involved in football, where he was a resident assistant coach.

Jimmy teaches at Argentina Middle School in Kansas City, Kansas as a special education resource teacher. He is the head football and wrestling coach at Argentine Middle school. Jimmy is also an assistant track coach there.
