|
The 2006-07 season had a slow start but finished off strong with a 6th place at the Sunflower League Tournament, 3rd at the Regional Tournament, and 10th at the State Tournament with two wrestlers in the finals. Aaron Ely finished off his career with his fourth state finish and second title with a 5-1 win over Wagner of Manhattan. Phil Witt came on strong to take second at 160 lbs. The team also took a third place finish at Silver Lake which started their good run through the league, regional, and into the State Tournament. Aaron Ely was voted the Regional Wrestler of the Year for the second straight year and also earned NWCA Kansas Wrestler of the Year honors and USA All-American Honorable Mention honors as well. This year the team returns four state qualifier in Phil Witt (2nd and 3 time qualifier), David Wilk, Logan Ortiz and Brett Johnston. Ashton Cooper (from Georgia) was a regional and country champion in Georgia last year. With this nucleus you add returning starters Jesse Woodruff, Donnell Jones, Zach Light, Andrew Ritchie and William Price, things look good for the Pioneersl During the off season, Phil Witt and Brian Beachem earned Brute All-American honors last spring, and Phil Witt competed for the Kansas National Team in the Junior National Duals and at Fargo in the Junior Nationals. The wrestlers are led by a solid class of seniors and are ready for the challenges ahead. The team will face some tough competition the first weekend in the Leavenworth Challenger with Manhattan (state champs 6A), Saint Thomas Aquinas (state champs 5A), Blue Valley North (5th in 6A), along with Raymore Peculiar (5th in Class 4) and Excelsior Springs (10th in Class 2) from Missouri. The team will travel to Missouri for the Lee's Summit North Invitational, Lee's Summit Christmas Invitational, and the Excelsior Springs Tiger Classic. The team will also compete in the 24 team Newton Tournament of Champions which include Manhattan, Norton, Clay Center, Arkansas City and Bishop Carroll. The competition we face on a weekly basis will prepare us for the challenges of the winning the Sunflower League, Regionals, and a quest for the gold at the State Tournament and a top five team finish. (parts printed from articles by Bob Dellinger, Charles Flandreau, and Matt Fuery) Wrestling, mankind's oldest and most basic form of recreational combat has a long and proud history. The sport can trace its roots back to the dawn of southern Europe dating back 15,000 years, artifacts form the Sumerian culture of the Tigris Euphrates River Valley 5,000 years, and in ancient Egypt dating back 4,500 years. Homer, a Greek poet, describes wrestling matches in the Iliad, while Pindar, another Greek poet, describes the wrestling match between the Gods, Zeus and Crollus, for the possession of the universe. Wrestling became the most popular event of the ancient Olympians with Plato, a Greek philosopher being one of its most famous participants. In ancient Sparta, women wrestled as part of their training for adulthood. The Roman period known as the "Five Good Emperors" brought a new development to wrestling as well as increased its popularity. During the Napoleonic ere, the style of Greco Roman developed. Wrestling has been popular in the Orient for at least 20 centuries, while wrestling was evident in Native American cultures of North and South America prior to the arrival of Columbus. In Europe during the Middle Ages such notables as Henry VIII competed in wrestling. Martin Luther advocated wrestling for health and well-being, as did individuals like French monk Francisco Rabelais, English poet John Milton, and German philosopher Immanuel Kant. Ancient Turks refused to allow their daughters to marry a man who could not wrestle, and the greatest honor for a bride in Mongolia is to marry a champion wrestler. Wrestling is still important in Russia, Mongolia, Turkey, India, Iran, and Japan to name a few. In United states history, such notables include President George Washington, Zachary Taylor, Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant, Andrew Jackson, William Howard Taft, and Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt. We at Leavenworth are proud to carry on the tradition of wrestling. |
